Contemporary wedding photography for Kingston, Toronto, Ottawa, Picton, and everywhere in between.

I’m a huge basketball fan, and a friend sent me this video the other day.  It’s almost a year old but I had never seen it before and it’s a pretty sad/happy/amazing story.  Check it out if you have 15 minutes to spare, but you might want to have some kleenex handy in case something gets in your eye…..

My 2009 wedding season is officially underway now that I have a few more weddings without much time off.  Lauren and Matt were married this past Saturday, the 18th, at Holy Name Church, a really cool (and intimate) church just outside of Kingston on Kingston Mills Road.  The rain held off long enough to take some portraits at Barriefield Rock Garden and then we headed to The Renaissance, one of my favourite Kingston venues, for the rest of the night!  Here’s a slideshow of the day:

Warning:  this slideshow is super long.  It feels like I haven’t shot a wedding in ages, so I probably went a bit overboard with the images.  But I’m pretty happy with how they turned out!

Check out this commercial from Coke.  Kind of makes you want to embrace life, all the while drinking a nice cold Coca Cola.  It’s kind of a weird pairing, but a nice message nonetheless.

More Basketball Action - KTW
April 16th, 2009

Here are some more basketball photos for Kingston This Week, this time from the first ever Elementary All-Star Basketball games!  Most of these didn’t make it into the paper, but when I shoot the event I like to shoot some for myself as well.  So here’s my little photo essay of the basketball action!

Tilt-Shift Goodness
April 13th, 2009

There’s a lens you can get for your camera called a tilt-shift lens that distorts the perspective and fakes depth of field where it shouldn’t be.  Normally as things get closer or further away from the camera, they get blurry when you’re using a shallow depth of field.  But with a tilt-shift lens, you can make the top, bottom, or sides of the frame start to blur when they shouldn’t.  It’s a neat effect, and I’ve seen some great photos with it, but these videos are some of the coolest examples I’ve seen yet.  When you shoot large things (buildings, landscapes, vehicles) and apply a shallow depth of field to them, it freaks your brain out a little bit because you don’t normally see such large objects out of focus.  They end up looking like little toys and models.  It’s really neat.  Here are some awesome videos by Sydney-based photographer Keith Loutit showing this technique:

ISPWP Real Weddings
April 6th, 2009

I’m a member of the ISPWP (International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers) and they recently selected one of my weddings to showcase in their new “Real Weddings” section!  You can check out some highlight images from Marsha & Marc’s wedding here!  But the nice thing about the site is that they do frequent updates to their blog with other photographers’ photos, stories, links, etc.  It’s a great spot for brides to check out (and visit often) because, not only can you find a great photographer from their listings, but you can browse cool images and get lots of killer ideas.  There are some pretty awesome photos of little details, flowers, dresses, venues, and more.  You can check out the main ISPWP website here:

I’m a huge basketball fan, so I was pretty psyched to go and shoot the senior boys all-star game at Queen’s University the other night!  It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, especially because I had it in my mind to shoot only horizontal frames for some reason.  Basketball players and horizontal frames do not go hand in hand.  Here are some of my favourites.

Although the composition is pretty terrible, you have to give respect to a big dunk.  This guy (Owen Klassen from Bayridge Secondary School) had some pretty big slams in the second half.

And here he is trying to throw down a missed free throw.  I’m pretty sure it was a lane violation, but check out the guy cowering next to him.  I have fond memories of getting dunked on in high school once, and I think I pretty much did the same thing.

Just do it.

Some behind-the-scenes action between quarters.
